My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that the purpose of the classroom is to nurture the students’ growth and help them discover themselves and their roles in society. I will use my music classroom as a safe environment to share with students the value in being part of a community and cultivate a love and appreciation for music.
Students thrive in supportive environments. In order to fully immerse themselves in their education, students need to feel secure physically and emotionally in their surrounding space. I will ensure that my classroom will promote encouraging and positive behavior between all individuals by using inclusive language and movements. Empathy will also be a foundational trait in the classroom which develops students’ abilities to understand and connect with their peers.
Community fosters a sense of belonging and purpose for students. Students can easily connect with those around them when they are relieved from the pressures of judgment. As a result, they are able to explore and bond over each others’ capabilities, building relationships that will form a community. I will help foster the students’ understanding of their role as members cultivating this new community by the stressing how their choices and skills contribute to the success of the group.
Appreciation for music. I want to continuously expose students to different forms of music to help cultivate a love for the art form. Music can serve as a creative vehicle for multiple purposes, such as self expression, encouragement, and spreading knowledge. I will share with my students the great impact and beauty of music through different repertoire, music literacy and music history lessons.
Overall, students will be able to experience the significance of belonging to a community and enjoyment for music with the help of a supporting environment in my classroom. Community engagement and freedom of expression will give students more insight into their self identity.
